Links of Interest - Snowed In Edition!

Yeah, you know the drill by now.

* - First off, go help Project Daspletosaurus somehow!

* - Also, help /Filmcast's raise money for FilmAid!

* - Passport to Dreams Old and New has written what may be the definitive last word on "Captain EO".

* - Both Total Media Bridge and The Onion AV Club did recent retrospectives on "Ducktales".

* - Total Media Bridge also revisited "Loonatics Unleashed" so that we don't have to.

* - The AV Club also prompted a lively discussion of media that is hard or impossible to experience.

* - Don Carson's blog has a treasure trove of wonderful Disneyland concept art.

* - Andreas Deja shared some beautiful character design sketches by Milt Kahl of what would have likely been a very different version of "The Black Cauldron".

* - Speaking of "Black Cauldron", according to Parkeology, Tokyo Disneyland once had a unique interactive walk-through attraction based on the film for years and years.

* - As far as new stuff in the Disney parks, after reading this FutureProbe post, I am not looking forward to the fallout from My Magic+...

* - Filmspotting SVU did a terrific episode about mostly-obscure Disney films.

* - I am kind of in love with this Uncanny X-Men cover art by Stuart Immonen.

* - Haven't seen "Cabin in the Woods" yet?  Fix that immediately and then read this Dinosaur Dracula post about its best scene.

* - So... "The Stooge".  I've said this before and I'll say it again, I'll believe that a "Roger Rabbit" sequel/spin-off is actually happening when I am sitting in the theater and actually watching it.

And here are my results for the Great Backyard Bird Count weekend! Not the most disappointing GBBC I've ever had, but still kind of a bust:

9 species total
2 Mourning Dove
2 Downy Woodpecker
1 Blue Jay
15 American Crow
2 Black-capped Chickadee
2 European Starling
2 Northern Cardinal
1 House Finch
50 House Sparrow

Sketch of the Day! A while ago, on Twitter, Brian Switek wondered aloud why he couldn't combine "Downton Abbey" with a simultaneously-airing documentary on giant squids. How could I resist? Ladies and gentlemen, "Downton Squids":

WDW 2011 - Everything Cool is Old Again... or Something.

Brace yourselves, everyone. I'm taking a big step out of the winter doldrums and attempting to get back to my traditional three-times-a-week posting schedule.

There wasn't much new going on in Walt Disney World since our last visit there. About the only interesting brand new stuff in Magic Kingdom was the fact that Toontown was completely shut down and there was a lot of construction as detailed in this very long
Orlando Theme Park News post (with a bonus scary photo of the Space Mountain track with the lights on). The Flower and Garden Festival over at Epcot was lovely as always too (and Theme Park News has a boatload of photos for that event as well.)

The most unusual thing about this year's visit to WDW was the fact that some of the best things we saw were kind of old.

WDW 2011

I only had a few days in the park (my primary reason for going was to visit my aunt) so I had to be pretty picky about what I was going to wait in line for. Honestly, seeing the beautiful Epcot flowers and being in the sun was more than enough (especially, and I will freely admit this, for my mental health). But there was one thing I was dead set on seeing this trip:

WDW 2011

Hell and yes.

If you are unfamiliar with the greatest and best 3-Effin-D movie ever made, TV Tropes and (of course) Orlando Theme Park News has some decent introductions. If you ARE familiar with "Captain EO", and the very mention of it gave you a nostalgia buzz, you should make this a priority if you happen to be visiting Disney World soon. "EO" looks and sounds better than I remember and "Honey I Blew Your Eardrums Out" can go to hell for all I care. Unfortunately, Disney has been mum as to how long they will keep the good Captain in his rightful place. The attendant at the theater said something lame about "eh, we'll keep it until crowds drop down."

WDW 2011

"EO" is still a very big draw. That's a packed house right there; standing room only! Make sure you get to the theater in time to see the preshow as it is a trip in it's own right.

WDW 2011

Over in Magic Kingdom, the classic Main Street Electric Light Parade was staging a long-overdue comeback (I apologize for the eye-watering pictures, but that's night photography for you). Now, I might have seen this back when I was too little to remember anything, so it was new to me.

Having grown up during a certain Disney era, one in which most of their parades are either dedicated to their current movie in theaters or to the best-loved moments in their most popular movies, there were some moments in the circa 1977 Electric Light Parade that struck me as a little weird. And you know how I know this parade is from 1977?

WDW 2011

Because it ends in a totally awesome Bicentennial-themed float...

WDW 2011

With an incredible gigantic Elliot float ahead of it. "Pete's Dragon" was Disney's latest movie in 1977. As Elliot passes by, you can almost hear the chorus of children asking, "WTF is that?"

WDW 2011

WDW 2011

The "Peter Pan" and "Alice in Wonderland" floats have aged much better, all things considered. But I don't know what they were thinking when they designed these next two floats:

WDW 2011

(That thing has got to scare children.)

WDW 2011

Would you believe they decided on the Nightmare Fuel-errific Pleasure Island sequence to represent "Pinocchio"? Yep, cavorting mutant donkey-boys and everything.

WDW 2011

I love the random goofy bee and centipede, as well as the other cute little beetles, snails, turtles, and such. You'll see why in a minute.

WDW 2011

As the parade winds it's way down towards the central hub, let us look back to 1985 why not, and the very best television appearance of the Main Street Electrical Parade ever. (For the more prosaic among us, note that the only real difference between the older versions of the floats and the 2011 versions is that their old Christmas lights were swapped out for new LEDs. Also, I am genuinely surprised the "TRON" people didn't make an appearance in the 2011 parade.)

After the parade, we saw the newly-added prologue to the "Wishes" fireworks called "The Magic, the Memories, and You!" It's a strange ride indeed, with animation projected upon Cinderella Castle itself, in the manner of this breathtaking promotional video (annoying song warning).

Captain Eeyore and The Weirdest Disney Thing

"Captain Eeyore"... might just be one of the greatest things I have ever seen.
Never intended for the eyes of people who are not Disney Cast Member Cyborgs, this little slice of happy was created to be the highlight of a cast party. It's since become a cult favorite that has recently gained some new fans thanks to the wonderful Walt Dated World website posting it on Facebook as a tribute to Michael Jackson. It may be the best tribute I've seen so far:

It's a little bit funnier if you know the back-story (here care of Jim Hill Media), particularly the horror stories centered around that walking design flaw better known as the original Pooh costume. (Anyone in the suit was completely unable to use their arms as, unlike in the film, you are not allowed to break character for anything. Think about that for a minute.)
If you're the impatient type, skip to Part Three, which parodies most of the "Captain EO" scenes you actually remember and has Eeyore dancing.

Now, a while back, I was finding and posting several other weird Disney film and television clips from my past that I'd found online. I was hoping to eventually build to the weirdest Disney cartoon I remember seeing but it slipped my mind. Well, now is the time. Now is the best time! Now is the best time of your...
...Uh, anyway.
The weirdest Disney thing (of which I am currently aware at least) is a cartoon called "Plutopia":

Actually, I will make one comment about this cartoon, and it is specifically directed at all the "Oh noes, think of the children" types out there. I saw this cartoon a lot as a little kid. And even back then it freaked me out a little, but I was unable to put into words exactly why. (Until I watched it again in college and realized that Pluto is fantasizing about being overfed by a sadomasochistic cat.) So dark and/or adult things in cartoons will not scar a child for life or anything because it will probably go right over their head. Usually.
Also, the "bone well" is creepy if you think about it.
